O-Sensei’s farming was part of his practice. Much earlier, O-Sensei farmed when he created the community of Shirataki in Hokkaido. After WWII, food was scarce in the city, and O-Sensei knew he could feed people if he farmed. So, he increased the fields in Iwama and farmed a lot.

SHINGENOBU OKUMURA

A few years after the end of the war, life began to return to normal. The country was still in transition, and there were many people without jobs. Many joined the Iwama dojo looking for a new chance at life. Although O-Sensei had a garden at the dojo, there were soon more mouths to feed than he could handle. O-Sensei put the new uchi deshi to work clearing nearby fields so that they could be planted. Although O-Sensei had his students clear bamboo fields to make more space for growing vegetables, this practice was not typical for dojos.
